The first two items on the menu above are often lumped together. A quick and cheap website is the holy grail of people who just want to have a presence on the internet. There are many ways to obtain this goal. Before pursuing the task of getting a web site quickly and cheaply on the internet one must ask," Where am I going to put the web site on the internet?" To put your web site on the internet you must first find a web host. A web host is a service that has a collection of computers in a secured environment connected by a large internet bandwidth for the purpose of storing and displaying web pages. There are various web hosts that will let you put up a web site up for free or very low cost, but for the most part it is a bait and switch scheme. The first problem you run into is losing control over advertisement. Some web hosts may put ads on your web site that are at best not in the same theme as what you are promoting, or at worst, will drive away customers. Examples are ads for adult dating sites, or sexual enhancement products. A number of free web hosting services will not even let you advertise on your own site without additional cost, others will only let you pick from a list of their affiliate companies that have paid to be on the web sites. You do not get any of the revenue from the advertising because the money received is paying for your web site.
When I started out in web design, I signed up for a cheap web hosting service. It cost a little over $3.00 a month. I was shocked that when I decided that I needed a database, I had to upgrade, and the upgrade was $60 a month. This is very common among the "free or cheap" web hosting services.
